The territory occupied nowadays by Romania was inhabitated since prehistoric times.
Burebista was the first great king, being the creator of Dacian State
unifying the tribes in the area.
Along the centuries many civilisations invaded those territories,
elements from their culture and civilisations being joined to the dacian culture and civilisation.
After the Second World War, Romania was part of Eastern Europe communist block.
After 1989 Revolution, Romania was reborn, a new Constitution being addopted,
by which Romania is declared republic with multiparty political system,
market economy and in which his citizens have right to freedom of speech, religion and private ownership.
Most important events in Romania's history:
10.000 B.C. - Signs of civilizatins on those territories (cave paintings in nord-west Transylvania).
5.000 B.C. - Proofs of the Neolithic culture (Hamangia and then Cucuteni).
3.000 B.C. - Thracians tribes of indo-european origins establish in the area.
2.000 B.C. - Documentary proof of geto-dacian people (Herodot: "the bravest and fairest of all the thracians").
700 B.C. - Establishment of greek cities on Black Sea.
70-44 B.C. - Dacian king Burebista unifies dacian tribes and creates Dacian State.
101-106 A.D. - Romans conquer Dacia.
271 A.D. - Romans leave Dacia.
Sec. IV - The christianization of daco-romans is documented.
Sec. XI - Hungarian people invade the central and nord-western part of Romania (Transylvania).
Sec. XII - The germans establish several cities in Transylvania.
Sec. XIII - First formal division of Romania's teritory: Transylvania, Moldavia, Walachia.
Sec. XIV-XVII - Conflicts with the Otoman Empire.
Sec. XVII - The romanian principalities are being unified under the reign of Michael The Brave.
Sec. XVIII - Transylvania and the northern part of Moldavia are incorporated in the Habsburg Empire.
1821 - Moldavia loses its eastern part (Bassarabia) in favor of Russia.
1859 - Alexandru Ioan Cuza is chosen ruler of Moldavia and Walachia.
1862 - Unification of Moldavia and Wallachia and formation of national Romanian state.
1867 - Transylvania (under Hungarian authority) undergoes a period of strong magyarisation.
1881 - Romania becomes kingdom.
1914 - Romania joins to First World War on the side of Triple Entente.
1918 - Transylvania, Bassarabia si Bucovina unite with Romania.
1940 - Soviet Union annexes Bassarabia and northern part of Bucovina.
Under Germany and Italy pressure, the northern part of Transylvania is given to Hungary
and southern part of Dobrogea is given to Bulgaria.
1941 - Under military dictatorship of Marshal Ion Antonescu, Romania joins Second World War
on the side of Germany, to get back Bassarabia from Soviet Union.
1944 - King Michael take over the leadership of Romania and joins Soviet Union against
fascist Germany.
1945 - By Yalta Agreeement, Romania is part of Sovietic communist block.
1947 - Romania is declared Popular Republic.
1950 - After Stalin' death, Romania begins to distance itself from Moscow.
1968 - Condamnation of Soviet Union intervention in Czechoslovakia by the communist leader
Nicolae Ceausescu, brings to him a positive image in the occidental world.
1980 - To pay back the external debth, Ceausescu imposes a strict life regimen.
Also, the civil rights are severe restrictioned.
1989 - During Romanian Revolution, Ceausescu's cabinet is removed from leadership.
