Black Sea - Seaside resorts
The Romanian seaside is situated in the south eastern part of the country, in the Constanta county, stretching out between the Danube to the west, the Black Sea to the east, Bulgaria to the south and the Chilia Branch of the Danube to the north, on a total length of 245 km.
More than 2500 years ago this part of the Black Sea shore, at that time known as Pontus Euxinus, attracted the Greek colonists, who established here three settlements - Histria, Tomis and Callatis. The latter two have continued their existence long after the Hellenistic period, to evolve into the modern cities known today as Constanta and Mangalia. Vestiges of the ancient Hellenistic times can be still admired today.
Nowadays the fine sand on the beaches, the friendly marine water, with no dangerous sea currents, no dangerous plants or fishes, and the qualitative accommodation services attract no more Greek colonists, but tourists from all over the world, wishing to spend a nice and relaxing holiday in one of the beautiful Romanian resorts.
The maritime climate, with Mediterranean influences to the south is ideal for the ones who love long and warm summers, who can take advantage of the 10 to 12 hours sunshine a day. The water has a low salt content near the shore and temperatures during summertime between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The beach ends gradually in the sea, the water is on distance of 100-200 m from the shore only 1 to 2 m deep. Ideal for families with children.

Dobrudja (Dobrogea in Romanian), the historical province where the Romanian Black Sea coast lies, shelters a great number of archaeological and historical vestiges, part of the cultural heritage of the Romanian people. You can start your trip in the past by visiting the remains of the three colonies, established by Greeks in the 7-6-th centuries BC. The first one and the oldest settlement on the Romanian territory, Histria, you will find in the northern part of the region, on the shore of Sinoe Lake. In Constanta, the capital of the Constanta county and the largest Romanian seaport, there can still be seen the remains of the second Greek colony, Tomis. The Roman Edifice with Mosaic, an impressive architectural monument, that includes beautifully adorned buildings, and the Statue of the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Nasso, who was exiled in Tomis and died here, are only two of the wonderful tourist attractions to be visited in Constanta. Further to the south you will reach Mangalia, the former Callatis, that shelters the ruins of the Callatis citadel and necropolis.
If you want to explore further the history of this region, you can make a longer trip to the village Adamclisi, about 100 km to the west, and admire the monument Tropaeum Traiani, an outstanding construction, built to celebrate the victory of Romans against Dacians at the beginning of the 2nd century AD, and the vestiges of the Tropaeum Traiani citadel.
If you are interested in the customs and traditions of the Dobrudjan people you should definitely visit the ethnographical centres in this area, that will reveal an amalgam of Roman, Greek, Macedonian and Turkish influences on the native culture. In this respect you should also take your time and visit the Dobrudjan Monasteries, Cocos and Cilic-Dere.
Among the Romanian Black sea resorts you will find definitely the destination suitable for you. For example Navodari is the ideal place for children to spend their holiday together with other children of their age, due to the youth camp that exists here. Costinesti is the favourite resort among young people and students who are looking for a lively atmosphere. For the young people looking on the contrary for a less agitated resort we would still recommend Vama Veche and 2 Mai. These resorts used to be the preferred destination for non conventional tourists, because here were allowed camping and nudism on the beach. Unfortunately for this category of tourists the officials have recently interdicted the camping on the beach and the new investments have changed completely the face of the two resorts. They start to resemble the other ones on the Black Sea Coast, which can be consider a big loss for the diversity of the Romanian seaside.
Eforie Nord, Eforie Sud and Neptun are not only seaside but also health resorts, being renowned for the curative effects of the therapeutic mud to be found here. These resorts offer mudpacks and other related therapeutic methods in modern equipped treatment units. In Constanta and Mangalia you can at the highest level combine wellness and culture. You can enjoy the sun on beaches with fine sand or visit archaeological and historical vestiges dating back to time immemorial. In Mamaia, the most modern resort on the Romanian seaside, you will find the biggest aquatic park on the Black Sea coast, covering an area of 2 hectares. The toboggans, the pools for children and adults, the small water falls, the restaurants and the souvenirs shops make Aqua park to one of the most visited leisure areas in Romania.
All Romanian seaside resorts offer a large variety of entertainment possibilities: sport activities such us water sports, tennis, basketball, volleyball or mini golf, nightlife entertainment - night clubs, discos - and cultural events. For example the theatre in Mamaia hosts every year the National Festival of Romanian Music. In the open-air theatres and cinemas you can enjoy a nice evening watching an interesting show or film. You can continue your seaside holiday with a trip in the fascinating world of the Danube Delta, a veritable water paradise, hosting numberless species of flora and fauna.
