Danube Delta is the newest lowland region in Romania formed at the Danube
river mouth, covering an area of about 4300 sqmiles and ranking as the second biggest
Delta in Europe after Volga's Delta. The Danube is divided at Patlageanca,
in two different branches: Chilia towards North and Tulcea towards South,
the latter branches out afterwards in Sulina and Sf.Gheorghe Branches.
Known under the name of "Birds' paradise", the Danube Delta shelters
more than 300 ornithological species, as well sedentary as migratory ones,
70 to be found nowhere in Europe but here.
To protect the rare birds, fauna and
flora species several areas of the Danube Delta territory were declared
ornithological reserves (Rosca - Buhaiova - Hrecisca,
Sf. Gheorghe - Palade - Perisor - Zatoane or Periteasa - Bisericuta - Gura Portitei) or
forest reserves (Letea Forest and Caraorman Forest) and were included by UNESCO
in the world heritage list. If you are interested in wildlife and birdwatching
you will find them here at its best.
Danube Delta is without doubt the main destination of the passionate fishers,
being home for a large variety of fish species such as: carp (Cyprinus carpio),

(Aspius rapax), hake (Vimbo vimbo carinata), as well as fresh water

The ornithological reserve Periteasca - Bisericuta - Gura Portitei is a enchanting tourist destination,
located at the contact limit between the Razim-Sinoe Lake and the Black Sea. You can reach Gura Portitei,
a strip of land between the Golovita Lake and the Black Sea, coming from Bucharest to Jurilovca, where
you have to take a passenger ship or a motorboat to cross the Golovita waters. In the newly established
tourist complex you can find accommodation or you can camp on the beach. On the Razim Lake you can visit
another nature reserve, the Popina Island.
Rosca - Buhaiova - Hrecisca is the second important ornithological reserve in Danube Delta,
located in the Matitia plain, north of Sulina Branch. Rosca and Merhei Lakes and
a few marshlands are home for a great variety of birds species, such as pelicans, egrets, herons or spoonbills.
To the south of Sf. Gheorghe locality stretches on 21000 ha the third important ornithological
reserve in Danube Delta, Sf. Gheorghe - Palade - Perisor - Zatoane. The reserve is characterised
by an interesting mix of ridges, lakes, marshlands, salty and fresh waters. Especially
Zatoane lakes are the favourite laying place for mute swans, red, white and yellow
herons and spoonbills. The reserve includes the Sacalin island, formed at the end of
the 19th century at the river mouth of Sf. Gheorghe Branch.
In the vicinity of the locality Murighiol, situated 28 km from Tulcea, south of Sf.
Gheorghe Branch you will find the Saraturi Lake nature reserve. The lake is renowned
for its salty waters and therapeutic mud.

The forests in the Danube Delta were formed on sandy ridges on seashore (Letea and
Caraorman) and are protected as nature reserves. Due to the mix of oak trees (Quercus robur),
lianas with a length around 25 meters and other creepers like wild vine (Vitis silvestris) and
ivy (Hedera helix) these forests look like subtropical forests. Beside oak you will find here
ash tree (Fraxinus angustifolia), elm tree (Ulmus foliacea), white poplar (Populus alba),
gray poplar (Populus canescens), trembling poplar (Populus tremular), shrubs such as blackthorn
(Prunus spinosa), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), hip tree (Rosa canina), sea buckthorn
(Hyppophae rhomnoides) or tamarisk (Tamarix gallica). Caraorman Forest
stretches on a 3000 ha area. Here you will find at the place called Hunters' well a
400 old oak tree, whose long branches spread out on the ground. That's why it was named
"The kneeled Oak". Letea Forest is located 7 km to the south of Periprava
locality and is a specific spreading area for white tailed eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla), and snakes such as vipers.
